The Old Firehouse (Walnut Ave & Church St)

Before the modern headquarters on Pearl Street, the heart of the Bohemia Fire Department (founded in 1893) beat at the corner of Walnut Avenue and Church Street.

This intersection was once the “Civic Center” of early Bohemia. The firehouse stood on the south side of the street, directly across from Bartik’s General Store (which also served as the Post Office). It was more than just an equipment garage; it was a community gathering spot. On Monday evenings in the 1920s and 30s, neighbors would gather to watch the Bohemia Fire Department Brass Band practice, marching up and down Walnut Avenue filling the quiet hamlet with music.
