From Bohemia to Bohemia: Vera Truhlar’s Journey
This Program Has Passed — Now on Video
Thank you to everyone who filled the building on Sunday, September 20 — every seat taken and then some. Vera was stunned by the turnout, and asked us to pass along her thanks. The full program is below, free to watch and to share with anyone who couldn’t be there.
Vera Truhlar traced her own remarkable journey — from Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, which she left in 1969, to Bohemia, Long Island, where she makes her home today. She came with a single suitcase and five dollars, meaning to stay one year.
Along the way she introduced the influential Czech figures who left their mark on American history and explored US–Czech relations through the pivotal moments and the key people who shaped them — the friendship between Woodrow Wilson and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the music of Antonín Dvořák, and the many others with Czech roots whose names Americans already know.
Drawing on her personal collection of Czech materials and decades of experience, Vera brought this history to life — and closed with a few travel tips for anyone hoping to visit the Czech Republic.
